Benefits of Participating in Two Codes
Through internships, scholarships, and recognizing students’ achievements, RIDE plans to boost the value of Two Codes for students.
RIDE plans to collaborate with outside companies and other government agencies to develop internship programs and make internships available to students who complete both Two Codes courses.
Additionally, the state plans to partner with local philanthropic organizations to provide scholarships for Two Codes students.
There will be a recognition day for student AP GoPo projects and AP CSP portfolios, plus awards given by the Governor to students who succeed in one and/or both courses.
RIDE will partner with higher education institutions to create specific recognition for Two Codes courses in admission, placement, or credit and develop post-secondary readiness awards for Two Codes schools based on AP Exam performance.
Two Codes courses will become the gold standard for how Pathway Endorsements can drive student learning in Rhode Island. Both AP GoPo and AP CS courses fit into existing pathways and meet the needs of project requirements. These two courses will anchor the existing pathways and form the basis for a future pathway. Examples include:
AP GoPo can be a key component of students’ Public Service Pathway experience.
AP CSA and AP CSP could meet two of the three required courses for the STEM Pathway endorsement.
The newly redesigned AP GoPo course includes a project-based component, which can be used for students to apply their skills through a performance-based assessment.
The AP CSP Exam has a performance tasks component, so the Exam could be used as a performance-based assessment.
RIDE will build a model sequence in each pathway that culminates in a student taking college-level coursework and an AP Exam. The new Two Codes Pathway will:
Provide an endorsement for students who have mastered both computer science and civics during their high school career.
Potential courses: AP CSP, AP GoPo, AP Capstone (AP Research and AP Seminar)
Culminating Capstone project would focus on the intersection of government and computer science.
Create additional incentives around the rigorous endorsement that rewards students who graduate with the necessary skills to be 21st Century citizens.
