Summary of AP Computer Science and U.S. Government and Politics in Rhode Island 

There is much to celebrate regarding the college and career readiness of the Rhode Island Class of 2019. This class saw a large turnout in students taking AP courses and earning college credit, with 40% of the graduating seniors having taken at least one AP course in high school and close to one quarter of graduating seniors leaving high school with college credit from AP exams. Yet, Two Codes courses lag behind. Only 3.5% of graduates took AP CSP, 1.4% took AP CSA, and 4.2% took AP GoPo.  

 In 2019, only 444 Rhode Island public school students took the AP GoPo Exam and only 458 took the AP Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) Exam. Even fewer students (131) took the AP Computer Science A Exam (AP CSA).

Student access to these courses varies. Currently, of the 60 public high schools in Rhode Island:

  • 41 offer AP CSA and/or AP CSP 

  • 21 offer AP GoPo 

  • 17 schools offer at least one AP CS course and AP GoPo 

  • Only 10 offer all three courses 

  • Four do not offer any AP CS or AP GoPo
