School Year 2022-2023 Readiness Courses

The Readiness Project was established in 2018 to ensure that every Rhode Island student graduates high school ready to enroll in credit-bearing post-secondary coursework. Since then, RIDE has partnered with WestEd’s Carnegie Math Pathways and Reading Apprenticeship to develop four courses: 8th Grade Math Readiness, 8th Grade Reading Readiness, 12th Grade Math Readiness, and 12th Grade Reading Readiness. All courses use student-centered pedagogy to strengthen key skills students will need to be successful in their next step, whether that is high school or college. Students in Rhode Island have two options for taking Readiness courses: in school or through the All Course Network.

In School:

The Readiness Courses are designed to strengthen foundational skills, reinforce content from previous grades, and address learning loss to prepare students for their next academic step. Middle Schools across Rhode Island can offer the 8th Grade Math or Reading Readiness courses; High Schools can offer the College Math Readiness and College ELA Readiness Courses for 11th or 12th graders.

Course Details:

  • Semester-long courses to be offered in-school as an elective during Fall 2022 and Spring 2023. Students take Readiness in addition to core instruction in Math or ELA.

  • Taught by one of the teachers on your staff who receives curriculum and lessons plans from RIDE’s curriculum partner, WestEd.

    • Teachers participate in 15 hours of summer PD (August) and optional bi-weekly coaching with a master teacher.

  • Student-centered curriculum with embedded social-emotional learning; course combines group work with an adaptive virtual platform for homework and skill reinforcement.

  • Students can use performance in the College Math Readiness course to help them place out of remedial courses at RIC, CCRI and URI.

Educators and School Leaders: If you are interested learning more about offering a Readiness course at your school next year, please email allison.peters@ride.ri.gov for more details.

Students and Families: Ask your principal if Readiness Courses will be available at your school next year.

On The ACN:

Students can also sign up to take a Readiness Course on RIDE’s All Course Network. The Readiness courses are an opportunity for you to strengthen your skills and prepare for college or high school. All four courses will be offered three times: Summer 2022, Fall 2022, and Spring 2023. Courses will be offered virtually, with synchronous Zoom sessions as well as asynchronous homework.
